The Selection draws its name from the Shinsengumi's process of choosing which operatives will risk their lives on the island expedition. The organization's leadership is in crisis: a key figure is dying, and the only known cure is the Elixir of Life, said to grow on a remote, uncharted island surrounded by impenetrable mists. Candidates are evaluated not merely for combat skill but for a particular temperament—willingness to kill, resilience, and the ability to function in isolation. Gabimaru, whose body is wired so that he registers no pain, is a natural fit for the shinobi role; Yuzuriha, whose eyes can perceive the flow of vital energy in living things, is selected as a healer and scout. The island itself is a place where the boundary between human and beast has eroded. The creatures that roam it—called Beasts—are humanoid in shape but driven by alien, predatory instincts. They mimic speech, mimic social behavior, and kill with a casual, almost theatrical cruelty. The Selection arc introduces the reader to this ecology in its most immediate, terrifying form: the Beasts are not merely obstacles but the island's dominant species, and the humans are the prey. Thematically, the arc interrogates the idea of selection as a form of control. The Shinsengumi frames the mission as a noble quest, but the candidates are, in effect, disposable. The Selection is less a celebration of merit than a cold triage: who is expendable, who is useful, and who will survive long enough to matter. The fog rolled in off the black water like a living thing, swallowing the hull of the transport ship until the oarsmen could no longer see the shore they'd been rowing toward. Gabimaru stood at the prow, his hands steady on the sheath at his hip, feeling nothing—not the salt spray stinging the small cuts on his knuckles, not the cold seep through his tabi, not the low thrum of fear he knew must be in the men behind him. Beside him, Yuzuriha pressed her palm flat against the gunwale and closed her eyes. "Something is watching us from the tree line," she murmured, her voice thin as a thread. "Many somethings." She opened her eyes, and they were the pale, unblinking eyes of a girl who had seen the inside of a dying body and learned to read the color of a soul. The mist parted, just slightly, and in the gap between the cypress trunks, something with a human face smiled. It had too many teeth. The oarsmen stopped rowing. No one breathed. And then the island, patient and ancient, exhaled.
